Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is proud to offer a sensory-friendly performance of The Nutcracker for children and adults with ASD and other sensory sensitivities, different abilities, or special needs. Read more for information about accommodations and logistics.

Complete with flurrying snow, a colossal Christmas tree and magic tricks galore, this holiday spectacular features over 100 dancers, 200 costumes and Tchaikovsky’s exultant score. Since its 1892 premiere, The Nutcracker has held a special place in holiday traditions all over the world. PBT adds its own spin on the time and place with a turn-of-the-century setting incorporating Pittsburgh’s own landmarks, historical figures and personality. Each performance features a unique casting combination, giving regulars the chance to see a variety of dancers perform iconic roles like Marie, the Nephew, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.

The production will be, for the most part, what you would see if you were to attend any other performance. First and foremost, PBT wants the production to retain its artistic integrity and impact on the audience. Some things will be different, however, such as:

  • - lowering sound and light levels so there are no sudden change
  • - eliminating any potentially startling effects, Drosselmeyer's magic tricks
  • - keeping the house lights at half throughout the performance
  • - relaxing of house rules--you are free to get up, move around, and leave whenever you need to
  • - allowed use of iPads and other electronics for therapeutic uses
  • - volunteers scattered throughout the theater to assist and direct audience members as needed
  • - quiet areas and activity areas in the lobby should your child need a break
  • - fidget objects and ear plugs will be available
  • - family restroom available

PBT staff, dancers, ushers and volunteers receive training from our partner organizations to ensure that the performance is a welcoming, inclusive and memorable experience for all of our patrons.
