Written by: Jessie Hoffman

In between finalizing plans for your summer vacation and getting the kids ready for back-to-school season, make sure to stop by the Cultural District on Friday, July 12 for our summer Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District presented by UPMC and UPMC Health Plan. Have some fun in the sun and participate in live painting demonstrations, view public art around the District, visit any of our renowned art galleries, listen to live music, and more. We’ve cultivated a schedule with our featured events and some fun things that you won’t want to miss. After all, your tan may fade, but make some memories on July 12 that will last long after the summer has gone.

5:30 pm: MYTHOLOGIES at Wood Street Galleries

This visual creation, spread over two floors of the gallery, is anything but traditional. Step into a cosmic void with Timée, located on the second floor of Wood Street Galleries. The creator of MYTHOLOGIES, artist Guillaume Marmin, worked alongside musician Philippe Gordiani to illustrate one of Plato’s most riveting theories: the idea that each planet in our solar system carries a different tone based on its individual orbital revolution, suggesting that the entire solar system would compose a perfect musical score. Pretty cool, right? If you agree, then take a trip up to the third floor to experience Anger & Hope. Watch as these inescapable, human emotions come alive as images and sound merge and shift all around you.

8:00 pm: What We Don’t Talk About at 937 Liberty

Life surely imitates art, but what remains when we’re gone? What We Don’t Talk About explores mortality and the ways Western societies choose to ignore it. Death and the symbolism chosen to represent it, like skulls, hourglasses, and clocks, were popular features in artwork for centuries, but in recent decades, this dark topic has become a theme that’s been pushed aside. This exhibition doesn’t shy away from death, and instead, invites visitors to experience the way art can be used to celebrate and memorialize.
