In pop design lexicon, ‘design thinking’ refers to the methods and processes used to investigate problems, to acquire and analyze information, and to posit solutions. The artists in RR&P use rhythm, repetition, and pattern as elements for investigating the varied possibilities of reductive abstractions.
Synchronic, divergent, and at times happen-stance, these works can appear convergent in their devices while divergent in their interests. Each of the artists works with characteristic elements of abstraction such as geometry, monochromatic or limited color, plainspoken materials, seriality, and precise craftsmanship to make their work.
While there is an extensive historical framework for artists working with repetition, rhythm, and pattern many of the recent precedent strategies have used these tools to suggest industrial standardization, organic growth, physical reiteration, and obsessive neurosis. Those are not these artists. Here visual phrases reduplicate gaining variety and speed, reverberating away from a stable point.
